It's 116 years old, and became so widely known that "Sambo" became a new racial slur for black people in some countries. In others, the racists hated it as an example of "Darky iconography" (because the protagonist and only human character is a little black kid). Kind of damned if you do, damned if you don't.

Sad part is, the truth is the book was never written to be part of ANYONE'S racist or reverse-racist political agenda. It wasn't that kind of time. It was only ever meant to be an enjoyable story for children, which it was. Little kids don't have political agendas. Not until well-meaning but ignorant adults force one down their throats.
